an instrument for producing and examining the spectrum of a ray from any source. The spectrum produced by passing a light ray through a prism can be examined to determine the composition of the source of the ray. »

With the possible exception of the telescope itself, no astronomical instrument has excelled the simple spectroscope in importance for our knowledge of the material universe (Harlow Shapley).
